Make Your Own Virtual Pet

Tamagotchis, Neopets, N-Gage Creebies... some of these are more or less popular than others, but they are all types of virtual pets that can provide hours of fun, engagement, and satisfaction. When you can't have a pet that you physically have to take for a walk or feed, you can enjoy the company and loyalty of a virtual pet anytime.

There are a wealth of different virtual pet communities in which you can create a pet. Make sure you choose the one that's right for you, based on its different features and characteristics. They each have specialties, though many of them share a lot of the same features. Take some time to look at each one separately.

Be sure before you create or adopt a pet that you can dedicate enough time to its care and well being. Oftentimes the way you treat your pet will greatly determine how it develops and what kind of pet it will be. Show it love and it will be a great friend for you!

Create your pet!

Even though each virtual pet community is different, many of them share the same features that engage visitors and keep them coming back for more.

A choice of a pet: There are often many different virtual pets to choose from. There are usually dogs and cats and other common pets, but sometimes there are hamsters, horses, birds, llamas, fish, snakes, and even creatures that hardly resemble actual animals. Sometimes you can create your own pet, while at other times you can adopt pets that already exist, that may have been neglected or were created by the virtual pet community.

For instance, with Neopets, you have many characteristics to choose from for your pet. Sometimes a pet with certain characteristics may be suggested for you, but these are the traits to choose for your pet:

  • Species - 42 different virtual pets (unless if there are special edition ones available)

  • Color - It can be green, yellow, blue, or red

  • Name - Anything between 3 and 20 characters long... be nice with it!

  • Gender

  • Location - Choose whether it likes to live in a forest, sea, river, jungle, town, city, mountain, or wilderness

  • Hobby - Does it like to gather food, explore the land, make friends, hunt for treasure, bully others, or read and learn?

  • Greeting - Does it greet others by acting friendly, smiling sweetly, approaching with caution, stand its grown, run away, insult from afar, attack if the other is weaker, or try to make friends?

  • Stats - It is equally great in strength, defense, and movement? Does it have greater strength and least movement? Does it have greatest defense? Each species has a few different sets of stats to choose from. Also, your pet will always have changing health (Neopet health is on a scale from 1 to 9); mood; hunger level; age; and level. You can even create more than one pet... just make sure you don't neglect the one you already have!

Points and Cash: You are given points and cash often once you join a virtual pet community. You can use these to buy items or improve the well being of your pet. Depending on the community, you can earn points by playing games or battling pets, and get cash by selling old items you don't want anymore.

With Marapets, you can earn different kinds of currency by completing certain types of tasks; earn Marapoints (MP) by playing games, chatting on the forums, completing quests, and randomly exploring the site; earn Baspinar Points (BP) by battling pets; and earn Restock Points (RP) by restocking items from most of the shops in the different parts of Marada, the land of Marapets.

Just be active in the many parts of the virtual pet community to earn as many points as possible. But be careful because sometimes something unexpected may happen to your points or cash... like having them be stolen by community pests!

You can also deposit and withdraw points and/or cash from the banks available in the community. Use them for safekeeping, as you can with a safety deposit box as well.

Items: There is basically any type of item you can imagine, with such random objects like exploding coconuts, wings of flame, and Shenkuu Performer Wardobe. They can be categorized in groups like New Items, Most Popular Items, and Items No One Would Ever Want To Buy, Seriously (these are featured on Neopets).

Once you have your virtual pet, you are often granted with complimentary items for your pet. With Neopets, you are given a new player's guide; a Newbie Pack with objects like toys, food, books or weapons; Neopoints; and Neocash. With your cash, you can buy more items for your pet. In some communities, like with Marapets and Rescreatu pets, you can trade your items as well.

Don't forget about dressing up your new virtual pet! This is something a lot of people have fun with. With Neopets, once you've created your virtual pet, you can customize it in a few ways:

  • View and sort items - Choose which items it can wear in its closet, or see what it already is wearing. Sort items by species (items only wearable by your pet's species), zone (the area the item is worn in, such as hat or shoes), or rarity (the value of rarity assigned to the item).

  • Apply the item - Put it on your pet!

  • Remove the item - Take it off your pet.

  • Save your work - You can save the different outfit combinations once you've created them.

  • Get more items - Go shopping for more things for your pet!

There are often different shops for you to visit and purchase items for your pet. In Neopia - the land of Neopets - there are different stores, lodges, and other facilities, even banks and restaurants! Neopia comprises of Neopia Central, Neopian Bazaar, and Neopian Plaza, each with different places to shop. You can also go to auctions to purchase more items, or trading posts. Use your cash at all of these places!

Finally, you can even make a home for your virtual pet! In Neopia, you can apply for a plot of land and begin construction after your application is approved. Purchase furniture and other items for your pet's home after it's done! Also, with Marapets, you can stash your items in an attic so it doesn't have to carry all of them with it all the time. You can even make sure your pet's attic or home has a security system.

Battles: This is something that is growing in different virtual pet communities. You can battle Neopets, Marapets, Cyopets and more. In Neopia, there are different battledomes in which to battle. You can target and choose who to battle based on their stats (played, won, lost, drawn, score, difficulty level, etc.). Check your own stats and equipment before you start to make sure it's a good idea to battle.

Games: Each virtual pet community has a variety of games to play for points. With Neopets, the games are categorized into groups like board games, card games, sports, educational, adventure, arcade classic, for kids, showcase games, top games, strategy, quiz games, word games, puzzles, multiplayer, luck/chance, and most challenging. Choose which type of game to play based on your skills to win more points!

Clubs: Many virtual pet communities have lots of clubs for you and your pet to join. With Marapets, users create clubs that anyone can be a part of; some include Fuzzy Friends, Battlers Union, Marapark, Marapets Institute of Art, Marapets Gold Members, and more.

Forums and Message Boards: Peruse the forums or explore the message boards to learn more about the virtual pet community you have become a part of, make friends, enter contests or shows, purchase or trade items, give ideas or suggestions, join groups, or go on a quest and discover new places. Just make sure that you don't violate the rules of the boards or forums or, in some cases, your account may be permanently frozen!

News: Be sure to visit this section in order to stay abreast of the newest developments in your virtual pet community. See who won battles, what new items are available, and what other nw features have been added in the different parts of the community. With Neopets, they have different news sections, including Latest News, New in NC Mall, New Games, The Neopian Times, Contests and Spotlights, and Coming Soon. Use the News section to get a one-up on others and stay on top of the latest things.

Donations: Sometimes you can up your status or earn more points or cash by giving real money, which the virtual pet sponsor will consider a donation to the community. Be careful which community you donate to, and make sure it seems legitimate enough to give your payment information.

Other Features: Some communities have certain features that others may not. Neopets has a Neovision section where you can watch short videos from other Web sites or ones that people submitted, trailers, an more; enter a contest or look through the archives. Also, you can check out the weather in Neopia or look at the Neopedia to make sure you understand the terms involved in exploring Neopia.

Why is content important in website development?

Importance of website content!

Content is definitely the key to website success! With much thought, deciding to share my website success secrets is very courteous and risky. All over the Internet, people are searching for ideas to improve and increase their websites. They are speeding around and searching for that certain website tip that will make them succeed. Many people overlook the importance of content to their websites. They are looking at all the link exchange sites, affiliate banners, sending out email blasts and completely rushing into the whole web site development process without stopping, seeing and using the obvious techniques. Website competition is way to high at this point to be doing what everyone else is. Many beginner website owners, including myself have made and or learned from this mistake. Your website needs content! That is as blunt as I can be about it.

For those of you who do provide great text and information in your website, then that is wonderful. Just keep those fingers typing and your mind working. The more quality information you provide via your site, the better your website will be. This article will tell you the reasoning behind quality content and it's importance. Notice how I stated "quality content"? Quality content is important because you want your readers to like what they read when they are directed to your website.

Online Social Networking Sites

I had two choices while writing this article: hunt down every online social networking site on the Internet and provide links but give little information about each, or provide more information about a decent selection of popular sites. I originally opted for the second choice, but then I thought of a third: review the more popular sites, and provide a link and a more abbreviated description for each of the rest. The result is the list below, which is only the first part of a larger collection of categorized sites.

If you know of any other online networking sites not included in the list at the end of this post, please leave a comment so I can add them. Thanks!

Bebo

Bebo is a nicely designed site that offers online social networking where friends share information and explore different forms of entertainment. Their are a lot of cool applications that expand what you can do when you're in the Bebo environment, which means you'll probably want to have high speed internet service if you're a member. These include the BeFunky Cartoonizer that allows you to turn photos into cartoons; iLike, which lets you add music and videos to your profile; the ability to make song dedications to friends and participate in a music challenge; and much more. At the moment, this site is more popular in the U.K. than the U.S., but it can be used by anyone.

Capazoo is unusual in that it combines online social networking with the ability to earn "zoops," which can be converted into cash at the rate of $0.01 per zoop. You earn zoops by getting "tips" from other users for your videos, music, photos, profiles and more; when you invite friends to join you at Capazoo; and for other member activities.

Facebook

Facebook advertises itself as "a social utility that connects you with the people around you." What that means in practical terms is that it is aon online social network that allows you to upload photos, publish notes, get news from friends, post videos in a profile, tag friends and join a network to see people who live, study, or work around you. Facebook is much like MySpace, but in my opinion, it's easier to navigate and better looking.

MySpace

MySpace touts that it's a great online venue to meet your friends' friends. And if your friends' friends are in bands or are celebrities, you'd have an even greater chance of finding them there. But plenty of other people use MySpace too. It's a happening online social network, even though it's not a very elegant environment. As of this writing, MySpace had just added ringtones, news and an Impact section, which focuses on giving back by helping the environment, getting involved in politics or donating either money or time to nonprofit organizations.

Twitter is an online social network that allows people to stay connected through the exchange of quick bursts of information. You also can use it to network by exploring your "block" to see who has been using Twitter at the same time as you. But Yuwie earnings aren't entirely based on the efforts of other people. They pay you for your own page views as well.

50 Keywords which pay $2 - $10 per click (Adsense)

Make More Money from Adsense!

For most people on hubpages google adsense is the main way that they earn money from the writing that they publish. If you want to maximise the amount of money that you are making from the work that you do creating hubs to publish on hubpages by increasing your google adsense earnings then the most important thing that you absolutely have to do is to pick the right keywords.

Keywords are important words on a web page which are taken to represent the overall content of that page. It is important to choose the right keywords so that people will be able to find your hubs (or blogs or websites as the same principles apply), but it is also very important if you want to make money from adsense that you create pages that are associated with keywords that advertisers are willing to pay highly for.

Your keywords should be included in the title and url of your page, and on hubpages should be included as tags, and if possible you should include them roughly every 100 words throughout the text (but not more because you may get labelled as a keyword spammer).

I know that one of the most difficult of all the things that you have to do when you are trying to make money online is to find topics to write about that have good potential to make you some money, so I hope that this hub helps to give you some inspiration.

IMPORTANT - How to make money with these keywords

It is important to remember that these are keywords for you to target high paying advertising so that you can make money fromyour hubs / websites, and not the keywords that you should be using to try to get into the search results and get visitors to see your content. Getting into the google search results for any of the keywords above would be very difficult indeed.

Let me give you an example - according to my list 'gem shopping' pays $4.96 per click, so if you can get people to visit a page based around this you can potentially make some really big money from it. But there is a hell of a lot of competition for it, so how can you get any traffic? It's actually simple, you create a page which includes this major keyword in a longer keyword chain, such as 'astrological gem shopping'. You now have something specific to write about, a good chance of getting some niche traffic, and yet you can still take advantage of the high payout!

Finding High Paying Keywords Yourself

Rather than relying on my little list the best things that you can do is to get a bit of keyword research done yourself. Although you can't always rely on it 100% for giving you accurate stats for search traffic volume, the google keyword tool fromAdwords is a great way to find out how much advertisers are paying for various keywords so that you can make sure that all of your hubs and webpages have the best possible chance to make you good money.

What is Squidoo?
That's a free social networking systembased on ads and affiliate links like Google, Amazon, eBay. Here, everyone can build lenses on topic of interest or what one knows best, for example cooking, music, films. The more popular lens is,the better is its lensrank. Just a good idea is needed and the earnings could be from some $ to some thousands of $ a year.

Lensmakers on Squidoo start getting the first earnings in approximately 2 months period. After updating the lens, the earnings get bigger and can reach the amount of about 1000$ a month. It's worth trying.

Squidoo has already nearly 1,000,000 hand built lenses.
Squidoo earning system
The earning is not constant and depends on Squidoo's profit.
the better lensrank is, the bigger the earnings. Passive lenses get about 0,08$.

optimizing your webpage for google adsense

When I first started writing here at hubpages, I had no idea about anything. Nothing. I had never written a word online and did not know who to believe about making money online – or about making money with google adsense which is the most prolific form of advertising revenue on the internet.

One thing that never occurred to me was that the placement of text capsules and photo capsules would dictate the placement of certain adzones. The positioning of the ads in relation to the content is one of the keys. Hubpages usues YieldBuild, an ad optimization software that, as far as I can tell, does an extremely good job of choosing the ad type and placing it in the best position. The layout I choose includes two blocks of text and one photograph, allowing the ads a range of positions available. I use the exact same layout on my own blogs and have found this to be optimum.

Content

It is always a toss-up between getting ad clicks and satisfying a reader’s needs. You can’t have it both ways. I see an awful lot of people on the hubpages forums asking why they are not getting any clicks.

Simple – your content either does not suit the range of ads available – for example if you have just written a hub about your experiences as a snail farmer – you are unlikely to have many appropriate advertisers.

Or – you gave the reader exactly what they were looking for and they have no need to click on any ads. As an example – my recipe hubs. I have found these to be very low paying and generate low amounts of ad clicks. Why? Because is someone came in looking for a hamburger recipe – that is exactly what they got –the best hamburger recipe on the planet. They have no need to click on any ads.

So – if you want ad clicks – you need to tease a reader and then give them a reason to click on an ad. At one point I seriously considered deleting half my recipe hubs. The half with the recipe instructions……… Just kidding.

Keywords and subject

Your pages need content related to keywords that advertisers will pay for. Simple really. Write about a given subject, add the keywords to both your text and the tags – then give them nearly, but not quite enough information – you will generate more clicks.

Facebook Farm Town Review

Farm Town

If you have not tried FacebookFarmTown yet, then you are missing out on a fun and addicting game. I have had many people tell me that they signed up for a Facebook account for the Farm Townapplication. I have created a Facebook account to give the game a try. At first, I thought it was a little boring. However, after about an hour of playing the game, I was hooked. If you have not played it, you should. It is 100% free.

Starting FarmTown

To start playing Farm Town, you have to first, create a Facebook account. Then, you go to applications on your home page and click on the Farm Town link. When you first load the game, you have a small bit of the farm already created for you. You want to invite all of your friends that you have found on Facebook to be your neighbors. Then you find the tools on the bottom of the screen and start plowing and harvesting.

Farm Town Plowing

You will need to begin plowing your farm in order to plant seeds. You look at the bottom of the screen and use the plow tool to do this. Try to plow your spots straight in a row.

Farm Town Planting Seeds

The next thing you need to do is plant seeds to grow so that they can be harvested. You click on the store icon at the bottom of the screen to purchase seeds. You have certain seeds available to you in the beginning, and then you can buy more as you advance levels. The way you advance levels is by selling your harvested crops at the market or harvesting and plowing for other people.

Farm Town Harvesting

After a period of time, you will be able to harvest your crops. It will tell you when you purchase your seeds how many hours or days that it takes for the harvest to be available. When you click on your farm and the farm is ready for harvesting, you pick the harvesting tool at the bottom of the screen and harvest and store your crops. Then you go to the market and sell them.

Farm Town Store

  • You can purchase many items from the Farm Town store. First, you click the icon at the bottom of the screen and go to the store. Then you buy the items that you have earned enough money to buy. You unlock different items as you advance through the game. Here is a list of the item categories available at the store:
  • Seeds
  • Trees
  • Buildings
  • Animals
  • Fences
  • Paths
  • Ponds
  • Other

Farm Town Trophies

After you reach certain milestones on Farm Town, you receive trophies. There are 14 trophies available for you to earn. They are all based o your neighbor status, such as; popular, influential, socialite neighbor and other achievements. This is just a little extra incentive to add more goals to the game.

Farm Town Neighbors

You can advance in Farm Town by going to your neighbors properties and doing things when you receive an invite to do this. When ever you are prompted to help at your neighbor’s farm, you click yes and receive 15 coins each time you do this.

Farm Town Marketplace

You can go to Farm Town market place to sell your harvested crops and to find work to earn more money to buy things for your farm. When you go there you will see a lot of people begging for jobs. If you are looking for work, you type in the chat bar that you need to work. You can earn coins for plowing and harvesting other farmer’s fields. Once you get picked to harvest or plow, you just click the invitation and go there and earn your coins. You can also offer to pay people to harvest and plow you farm.

Farm Town Inn

Farm Town Inn is a place where people hangout and chat. You can go here by clicking on the map and then clicking the icon for the Farm Town Inn. You can also buy land and make your farm bigger. You do this by clicking on the map and going to the Realtor office.

Farm Town Summary

In summary, I have to give Farm Town a 10 out of 10 score. I love the game and it is very addictive. If you play farm town already then you know this. If you do not, you should try it. It is totally free and very entertaining. I hope you enjoyed my review. If you play or start to play Farm Town, send me an invite through my email here and we will be neighbors. I need some more neighbors.

Useful Facebook Tricks People May Not Know About

I was talking to some people about Facebook and I realized that not many people take the time to figure out or even enjoy tinkering with its options like I do. So I decided to write an article about some Facebook tricks that I've discovered so far. You might find them useful.

#1. Decluttering Your Homepage

If you're like me, then you hate it when your homepage gets cluttered with all the junk activity of your friends playing games on facebook. You know what I mean. Those "So and so robbed Don Purtino's mafia in Mafia Wars" or "Blah caught a Scavenger mouse in MouseHunt". No offense to those who play these games, I'm sure they're lots of fun, but the rest of us don't want our homepage to be filled with these stories that we can't see our friends' important activities amidst all the clutter.

Here's the good news: You can configure your homepage so it doesn't display these stories anymore! If you hover your mouse on a story on your homepage, a Hide tab will appear on its upper right corner. Click on it and you are given two options: (1) Hide the person publishing the story or (2) Hide the application the story is from. I usually hide the application. In our examples above, that would be: Hide Mafia Wars and Hide MouseHunt. Voila! You will never see Mafia Wars and MouseHunt on your homepage again! Nice, huh?

Hide MouseHunt from Facebook homepage
If you ever change your mind and decide you want to see stories from the application back on your homepage, simply click on Edit Options at the bottom right corner of the news feeds on your homepage, select the application you want and click Add To News Feeds. But I doubt if you'll ever do that.

#2. Using Homepage Filters

See those options at the top left side of your homepage? Those are filters. If you've segregated your friends into lists, you'll see the friends lists names there, too. Click on one to view the activities of the people in that particular friends list only. I, for example, have grouped my facebook friends into Family, PCGS Classmates, SHS-G Classmates, etc. If I want to know what my old high school classmates are doing on facebook, I click on the PCGS Classmates filter on my homepage and only the recent activities of my classmates from PCGS show up.

To go back to viewing the activities of all your friends, click on News Feed at the top of the filters.

It's also easy to create or reorder filters. To create filters if you haven't grouped your friends yet, click Create. Type in the name of your filter and add some friends to it. To reorder, click on More at the bottom and drag the filters around. Just so you know, only the items above the double line show up by default when you visit your homepage. If you want to delete filters, click Create, select the filter you want to delete and click Delete This List. Remember to save your changes!

#3. Customizing Info Privacy

When I first started out on Facebook, I had decided to add to my friends list only people that I knew personally, so I filled out all the details in my Info tab. Then I started getting friend requests from online acquaintances or even strangers and I realized I couldn't display certain contact information to these people. As I was about to delete the info, I realized that you can customize privacy settings for each individual item in your Contact Information. Here's how:

  1. Click the Info tab on your profile.
  2. Hover your mouse over the Contact Information portion.
  3. Click on the Edit button that appears on its upper right corner.
  4. Click on the padlock icon next to each item and select Customize.
  5. Select Some Friends and choose only the friends or networks that you want to allow. You can even put exceptions.

Another way to do this is to hover your mouse over Settings (beside Logout), then click on Privacy Settings. There you can control your privacy settings for your Profile, Search, News Feed and Wall, and Applications.

#4. Cleaning Up Your Wall

Has your wall ever gotten hijacked by notifications such as "Blah started the quiz: Dr. Phil's Personality Test" then "Blah completed the quiz: Dr. Phil's Personality Test with the result The Vain, Self-Centered Leader" followed by a big story stating the same thing. Get rid of the duplicates by clicking on the Remove button that appears to its right when you hover on it! I've seen so many walls overrun by these useless notifications. I also remove the notifications that appear on my wall when I change some information on my profile. I like things neat and organized. (Which is why I hate that the current Facebook rearranges posts on my wall every now and then instead of following a chronological order.)

#5. Tagging People In Notes

Have you ever wondered if anybody bothers to read your notes on Facebook? It's like, nobody comments. And you wonder if your friends know you ever wrote it? That's happened to me, and I've realized that it's probably because my friends' homepages are so cluttered with the aforementioned junk that they didn't notice the note I wrote. So now I tag the people for whom the note was intended.

Well, strictly speaking, you only tag people in a note when you've mentioned them or written about them in it (just like you tag people in pictures and videos when they are in it), but I guess we can stretch the tag function a little. When you tag a person in a note, picture, or video, it appears on their wall so they have no chance of missing it. Unless they never look at their wall, which is pretty much impossible.

How do you tag people in notes, you ask? Easy. When you write a new note, you'll find "Tag people in this note" to the right of the title. When you type people's names into the blank, they appear under "In this note" and you've tagged them. When you publish the note, it will appear on their walls.

#6. Writing Notes

Okay, I assumed in #5 that you know how to make notes. For those who don't or have no idea what notes are, they're like mini-blogs where you can write anything for your friends to read. Where do you find the option to write a note, you ask? Well, by default it is bookmarked on the lowest portion of your profile. It's the icon that looks like a page on a spring-bound notebook. (Hover your mouse over the icons until you find "Notes".) When you click it you're taken to your friends' notes by default. There's a "Write a new note" button on the upper right corner. That's what you're looking for if you want to start a new note.

To view notes you've already written, click My Notes. Or you can click on your Notes tab in your profile. The "Notes about me" portion contains all the notes in which you are tagged.

How do you play Farmville on Facebook?

I see a lot of people find it addicting. How do you play, why is it fun, what are some tips? StumbleUpon

Although there was a lot of useful stuff on my Google Homepage, I didn’t want everything that was there, so I deleted some of it. Using my mouse, I c

Over the years I’ve been fascinated with caricatures! My friend, who is a decent artist, drew a ‘Judge Dredd’ type caricature of me when I was a teenager and I’ve always wanted to be able to reproduce this! Unfortunately, I have about as much artistic talent as my cat!

My interest in this never waned though, and over the years I’ve used programs like Photoshop to ‘mess around’ with my own face with varying results! Imagine my surprise and delight when I found a way to do this online!

Introduction

There are many sites on the web offering you the chance to change your face into a cartoon, however most of them seem to either be too difficult, or want to charge you for the privilege. The one I found, not only is free, but is very easy to use!

Befunky is one of the easiest photo-manipulation sites I have found. There are many things you can do to a photo on this site; the one I'll concentrate is on turning your photo into a cartoon.

There are some sites that offer free software downloads, and generally you get to use the software for a couple of weeks before having to register. Additionally, some of the professional art / photo programs such as PhotoShop or Corel Draw offer far more sophisticated solutions for producing cartoons / effects from photos.

The method detailed below can be used on most cartoon producing programs - I go into the specifics of one site, but the method is generally the same on all sites and it's really down to your own personal choice.

Step 1 - getting started.

Click the ‘Get Started Now’ button – nothing complicated here, you’re simply browsing away from the main introductory screen and heading over to the real ‘meat’ of the process.

Step 2 - select an application.

For this example I chose the application Cartoonizer, but you have the following options:

  • Cartoonizer
  • Warholizer
  • Charcola
  • Patriotic
  • Inkify
  • Line Artopia
  • Stenciler
  • Sunburst
  • Scribbler

At this time it doesn't really matter what you choose as you can change the application later one.

Step 3 - the photo.

You have several options on how to load or 'take' a photo; click the icon of your choice for more options:

  • Upload from computer
  • Upload via Webcam
  • Upload from URL

All methods are simple - my preference is uploading from the computer, but using a hosting site like Flickr also works well.

Step 4 - crop and rotate.

You can either edit your picture prior to uploading, or use the in-built tools that allow you to do rudimentary cropping and editing. The tools are easy and intuitive.

Alternatively, you can simply skip editing by clicking 'Skip Editing'

Step 5 - funkify.

This is where the majic begins; befunky takes the picture you uploaded an applies the 'application' that you selected in Step 2 - as mentioned before, you know have the ability to change the application - most of the applications have sub-settings that can be changed for different looks.

If you're happy with the results of the 'cartoon' then you can go directly to Step 8.

Step 6 - playing with the applications.

I decided I wasn't quite happy with the cartoon so I decided to change the picture in two ways:

  • I selected the apllication 'Line Artopia' using the icons on the left. This gave it a more 'artsy' kind of feel.
  • I then changed the type of 'Line Artopia' by selecting the second icon from the left on the 'Outline your Life' icons on the top of the screen - this changed the picture subtly; far more to my liking.

Step 7 - and there's more.

There is a lot more than you can do to the photo. Click onthe Goodies icon at the bottom and you have a whole bunch of different things you can do:

  • add speech bubbles
  • add arrows
  • fun stuff
  • borders
  • etc.

For the example I added some weird elves - I removed them later prior to saving! But it is fun!!!

Step 8 - all done?

Once you have a final product that you are happy with, and cannot funkify it any more then you are ready to save the picture. You have a couple of options:

  • Share - you can send an email to all your friends with a copy of the picture.
  • Save - allows you to save the final picture to your local hard drive.

Step 9 - voila!

That's it - you're done! This free site is extremely addictive and fun; it's actually surprisingly powerful too and you'll be amazed by the fun pictures you can produce using this site.

The final picture will have a 'befunky' border, but you can simply cut and paste this away.

Enjoy - here's my final picture!

Google Homepage USA

Now, I’m not completely helpless when it comes to the computer, but I have never given any thought to customizing my Google Homepage. I knew that iGoogle existed – it’s all over the internet - but I didn’t really know what it was, nor did I care. I thought it would be too hard or at least too much trouble to bother with. Well, I finally tried it today and guess what – it was actually really easy!

My friend lives in Great Britain, so he had Google Homepage UK. Naturally, I’d be using the American version. I started out by going to the regular, classic Google page and used “personalize Google Homepage USA” (without quotes) as my search term. I was expecting that I’d have to do a lot of reading. Knowing me, I would likely give up the second it looked like it was going to be too involved or take forever. Luckily, the search brought up the exact page and link on the Big G’s blog for me to get started.

The first thing I noticed was that I had tons of options. I thought, “Okay, here we go, now it’s going to get complicated. I’m only going to try this once and if it doesn’t work – forget it.” I started with themes. There was a vast selection, including beaches, palm trees, space, dots, the earth – just tons of different ones and they were all nice. You can add ones you custom make yourself but hey, I hadn’t even figured out how to use the stock ones yet.

Once I settled on the theme that I wanted, I clicked “Add this one” and boom it was there, along with a pre-set layout. I was very surprised to see that my Google Homepage already had my hubs and blog entries listed, all without me telling it to. I don’t know how it did that, but I assume it tied in everything that was attached to the email address that I signed in with. There was also a clock, weather widget, news feed and a few more items on the page that I could choose to keep or delete. This was getting interesting.

After familiarizing myself with the layout, I found that I can change my theme if I want to, just by clicking a button on the upper right. Maybe someday, I’ll figure out how to make and add a custom one. Right now though, I’m excited at how good my personalized Google Homepage is looking. There are so many ways that I can pretty it up and have everything just the way I like it. If only other things in life were like that!

Although there was a lot of useful stuff on my Google Homepage, I didn’t want everything that was there, so I deleted some of it. Using my mouse, I clicked and dragged the widgets around until I had them just how I wanted them. Then, I used the “Add stuff” button that I found beside “Change theme” to see what else I could have. There were tons of enticing things like Google Docs, Gmail, games, a to-do list and Google Map Search. It didn’t matter what I was looking for, I found it there. I chose one of the games and Google Talk for starters. It was kind of sad to see that there was no more room on the page for the other cool stuff that was available. I really wanted to have a photo widget and Music Mash, too.

So, as I sat admiring my handiwork, I happened to notice something on the upper left of my screen. I don’t know why I hadn’t seen it before, I guess I was having too much fun. Anyway, it was an “Add tab” button, which gave me another page. Great! I didn’t hesitate to click, name the tab (called it Fun Stuff) and add the photo and music widgets that I wanted. I was actually beginning to love my personalized Google Homepage.

As much as I’m enjoying what I’ve created so far, I’m sure that I’ll continue to change and update it because it’s so easy to do so. That’s just another great feature of iGoogle, I’ve learned.

Today, I’m going to brag to my friend who has the Google Homepage UK and try to convince another friend, Teresa, that she needs to pimp her Google Homepage Malaysia. Once she catches up, the three of us can party - all from our Google Homepage.

Unix Shell Scripting (Editor and Shell)

Operating Systems

The Editor

From the operating system discussion (click link above) we know that there are many different operating systems but how to communicate with the OSdepends on the type of OS you have.

DOS - There are at least two ways to communicate with DOS. You can have a file/script of DOS commands or a command line. The file/script would allow execution of one or more commands sequentially vs. a command line which allows execution of one command at a time.

Windows - In addition to the file/script and command line approach, Windows also has icons (representing one or more commands) to interact with the OS.

Unix - In addition to the file/script and command line approach, Unix with a GUI front end like X-Windows also has icons (representing one or more commands) to interact with the OS.

A OS script has command(s) or logic that enables the completion of one or more tasks. To create the file or script you would use a full screen editor supplied by the OS. If you are using DOS then the "ed" editor can be utilized to create a script. If you are using Windows then notepad can be utilized to create a script. If you are using Unix then the "vi" editor can be utilized to create a script. The editor you choose really depends on which one you are more comfortable with.

The Shell

Now that you are familiar with the OS and editor, it is time to think about the file/script that I have been discussing. Since I am most comfortable with the Unix and vi combination, I will use these tools as my preference for creating a file/script.

A shell is defined as a program that accepts operating system commands and submits them for execution.

In Unix, the file or script of commands is also known as a shell script and is created using the language of a particular shell. A shell script is executed under a shell. A Unix shell is a command line interpreter which passes commands to the OS for execution.

Unix has basically three different shells to work with - there is the borne shell (sh), c-shell (csh) and korn shell (ksh), With the creation of Linux there is also theborne again shell (bsh). Some shells are more optimal than others and some are easier to work with than others but all shells have their own syntax and structure requirements.

I have worked with many different Unix shells and prefer the ksh to perform tasks. The ksh is a combination of csh and sh languages and, in my, opinion is the most flexible.

Korn Shell

The Shell Structure

I cannot discuss the ways to create a ksh because everyone has their own style when it comes to developing in a language. I can, however, discuss the components that I feel should be included in each ksh.

The first line of every script should indicate the shell you are using. The line would look something like this - /usr/bin/ksh. This tells Unix what shell to execute the shell script under. The "/usr/bin" is the location of the shell.

The next few lines should be comments that describe the reason for creating theshell script, including, but limited to, author, date, time and version control information.

I prefer the structured well documented approach when it come to shell scriptingthat allows flexibility it terms of recovery, rerun, restart. Functions that error trap and log every command is ideal since you can build in a restart point based on the command last executed. Use plenty of variables to eliminate hard coding which enables portability.

Once the shell script has all the logic necessary to complete a task it is ready to be sent to the OS for execution. The execution of a shell script means that syntax is checked as the script executes (it is interpreted line by line, not compiled into an executable). If there are no syntax errors then you determine if the logic acted as you expected and thus the word testing is born.

How To Get A Free UseNext Account

If anybody doesn't know what UseNext is, it is basically a piece of download software.. The difference between UseNext and common sites such as RapidShare is that UseNext will allow you to download files from its database at a stupidly fast speed, at least as fast as your own internet connection allows. They have thousands of movies, music albums, software packages, and almost every digital product you can think of; I myself managed to download an entire movie in around 6 minutes. Anybody with experience or knowledge of downloading movies will know that this is extremely fast!

Now, UseNext is NOT a free site but they do offer a 14 day trial, before asking you to pay an astonishing 80 Euros per month to use their highest spec service. The thing is, they actually want to charge you for the trial! This may only be a few euros, but surely a trial should be free? Thanks to me, and this article, you will be shown how you can get this 14 day trial for no charge whatsoever......... The ONLY way that you will get a free UseNext account.

The Free UseNext Account Trick.....

Follow these simple steps to get your free UseNet account.......

1. Go to UseNext.com and click on the banner which says "Get Your Risk Free 14 Day Trial".

2. Clicking on this link brings you to a long form for you to enter your details. This is where you are expected to enter your personal information, entering fake information works perfectly fine, meaning that you can happily avoid the inevitable spam that these programmes will bring. The only bit that you must enter correctly is an email address which you can access. Just click on 'Next'

3. You will now be taken to a payment screen. Make sure that you select 'Paypal' as your payment option, they state that this entails a 1 euro processing fee. Accept the terms and conditions at this point and press 'Complete Order' at the bottom of the page. Dont worry, they can't take money from your paypal account at this stage!

4. You will now be taken to the paypal payment screen. Enter your real life paypal email address, but get your password incorrect intentionally on three consecutive occassions. You will be informed by paypal that you have entered your password(s) incorrectly. Believe it or not, this will trick the UseNext payment system into believing that you have paid.

5. You should recieve an email confirmation from UseNext shortly after this, giving you your username and password for the UseNext.com website. You can change account setting etc. if you wish. You will be presented with the option of downloading the UseNext software, which you should subsequently download.

6. When you open the software you are asked to provide your username and password, which you were given in the confirmation email. DO NOT enter these details, as UseNext will subsequently send you an email asking for payment. Instead, just leave these details blank and close the software.

7. UseNext will subsequently send you a new username and password within a few days (yes they are that stupid!) and you can use these to login with these without paying a single penny.

And hey presto! You now have a free UseNet account trial and haven't given them any of your personal details.

Sound Like A Lot Of Work For 1 Euro?

You can use this trick multiple times, an infinite amount of times in fact, saving yourself about 80 euros a month. Thats over 1,000 euros per year for this fantastic piece of software, which you are getting completely free..... and because of their own system faults. UseNext completely and utterly pisses all over standard p2p or torrent programmes, as it is about 25 times quicker and without the spyware/malware issues.

Have fun ;)

How To Make Phone Calls From An iPod Touch

As most of you probably know, the iPod Touch and the iPhone are almost identical; with the exception of one distinghuising characteristic - the iPhone can of course make phone calls, and the iPod Touch cannot. You will of course pay a lot more money for your iPhone as a result. Well the astonishing, but very good, news is that you CAN make calls from your iPod Touch. This hub will show you, in very simple terms, just how you can do so. This method will also work for making free calls from an iPhone, so those that spent way over the odds don't miss out (just playing with ya).

What You Need

  • A Jailbroken iPod Touch (or indeed iPhone), if your device is not already jailbroken - or indeed you don't know how, then check out this article, which will tell you how. Don't worry, this is free and takes about 1 minute.
  • If you have an iPhone then you just need your standard iPhone headphones. If you have an iPod Touch then you need to invest in a pair of Touch compatible microphone headphones, unfortunately iPhone headphones do not work with the iTouch. These will set you back just $10-$15, I have chosen some high quality but affordable pairs in the Amazon capsules to the right, the range of headsets compatible with the iTouch is pretty limited, as this is clearly a small niche!

How To Make Calls From Your iTouch

Once you are satisfied that your iTouch is Jailbroken, and you have the right headset, you need to install a VoIP application, there are currently two that I know of. These are the freeware SIP-VoIP application and another called Fring (which is compatible with Skype). I am going to talk you through the installation of SIP-VoIP which is a more established provider, although I recommend that you install Fring as an alternative option too. This is how you install SIP-VoIP:-

Step 1: SIP-VoIP is not found by Installer.app by default, so you need to launch Installer and then go to the 'Sources' tab. Now select 'Edit' and then 'Add' and type:- http ://touchmods.net/rep.xml (remove space after http) into the Add source dialog field. Press 'OK' and the Installer will present you with a refreshed list of sources.

Step 2: Go to the Install Tab and find the 'Touchmods' entry, where you will see an app called 'Touchmods SIP-VoIP'. Install this App. It will say that the source is 'Untrusted', just ignore this and continue the installation.

Step 3: SIP-VoIP doe not work with the most famous VoIP application, I'm sure that I don't need to tell you what that is - oh go on then it's Skype you monkeys - so you will have to set up a service with another provider. Luckily, there are loads. There are loads of them, but the one that I recommend is FreeCall. You need to register your details and your phone/cell number, and then 'top up' with airtime, this is typically a minimum spend of $10 or 10 euros. If you want to try some free calls first, there are providers out there that offer you a limited free trials. But they are for you to find on google ;-)

Step 4: Now your ready to link your SIP-VoIP application with whichever SIP provider you have signed up with in Step 3. To do this, just launch the app, then select 'Settings' in the bottom right hand corner. You will find a quick and easy form which asks you to enter the details that you will be given by your SIP provider. This will typically just be a username and password. When the form has been completed, press 'Save' and then select the Dial Tab which will take you to something called the 'Dialpad'.

Step 5: You are nearly ready to make your first call from your modified iTouch, all you need to do now is to connect the application to the SIP server. This is really self explanatory, just select 'Connect to sip server', which should just connect you straight away. Then all you need to do is dial your number (normally with the country code included) and select 'Call'

But What About Inbound Calls?

Of course, I have only told you how to make Outbound calls. But don't worry, it is even easier to register to recieve inbound calls. You can do this completely free atipkall where they will assign your iPod Touch a phone number with absolute ease and no cost whatsoever! There you go, your iPod Touch is now an iPhone ;)

Making Money Online – Three things that have worked for me at hubpages

There is much discussion about making money online and the internet is chock-a-block full of “guaranteed returns,” and “amazing opportunities,” to make money easily. I laugh at some of the ridiculous claims made. I am not going to make any such claims – in fact – It is hard work making money online. I have chosen hubpages as one of the income streams I currently enjoy, and as I am unlikely to ever get this page found in the search engines, thanks to the promotional efforts of the numerous spammers, scammers and occasional honest Joes, targeting "making money online," I will stick to discussing making money here on hubpages and talk about how I make the most of the various affiliates offered here, in the hope it will be of some use to the community. I will not discuss Kontera - I personally think it is a scam and a waste of time.

The learning curve was steep, and I was singularly un-successful at first. Partly because I was unable to pick the wheat from the chaff as far as advice goes and partly because I am naturally cynical. I automatically disbelieve most things I am told – especially if they make no sense. I will give you an example:

Google Adsense

I saw the recent hubchallenge as an opportunity to increase my adsense income. The community publishing aspect naturally generates more traffic to hubs created in this way. I do not usually go seeking internal hubpages’ traffic because it does not convert very well but hubs that attract outside traffic are usually ranked higher and google is a strange beast.

Google will rank you based on the traffic you have and therefore place you higher up the search engine rankings which will increase your traffic, so the benefit of hubpages internal traffic is to boost your authority with very little work on your part. I suggest taking part in the hubmob and other devices that are run. You will see increased activity and therefore increased rankings with the search engines.

I did not finish the 100 hubs target - I managed 51, but I wrote them all myself in between arguing on the forums and real work. :) I wrote them all to a standard format - 400 words, one photograph; specific high paying keywords targeted with each one, using the keyword I was targeting in the url, the tags, in the content and as the photo description and with no more than one outgoing link, mostly to other hubs using the keyword in that hub I am after. My daily page views have gone up by around 50% since doing the hubchallenge and my adsense has gone up by around 20% - I expect to make at least $500 this month and when the hubchallenge hubs are properly “aged,” I expect that to continue to increase. My goal is $1,000 a month within the next three months.

Ebay

A lot of people seem to have trouble using ebay correctly, as I did for quite a long time. There are several hurdles to over come, but I did finally work out what to do. Some time ago, I wrote a set of hubs around 2008 motorcyles. I wrote them knowing full well that I was unlikely to make much adsense income from them. Although I came in for a lot of flack at the time when I described how little I promoted them and several people kept telling me how useless the titles were as far as making money and attracting traffic, I did not write them for huge volumes of poorly-targeted traffic in the hope of generating a few adsense pennies.

I wrote them with the intention of making money from ebay when the 2008 motorcycles started being offered for sale as used bikes and spare parts. In the year or so since I wrote them, they have had almost 200,000 page views and rank pretty well for exactly the terms I wanted. Do a google search for “2008 gsxr 1000” and you are going to find one of my hubs. The others get found pretty well for similar searches and I am now making about $90 a month from ebay sales. I expect that to continue for at least five years and eventually drop off as they become more spare part sales rather than bike sales.

Amazon

In my not-so-humble opinion, there is only one way to make money from Amazon in any quantity – product reviews. I certainly wasted an awful lot of time adding an Amazon capsule to a lot of my hubs thinking that if some one was looking for a recipe, they might also be needing a skillet or a chef’s knife. And occasionally, they do, but nowhere near enough times to bother with.

So, I targeted specific ranges of products and wrote reviews. Some worked better than others. The two I targeted were iPhone accessories and Digital cameras. They balance each other well, because although people rarely seem to spend $3000 on a camera within Amazon’s short cookie life span, they are quite happy to spend sixty bucks on an iPhone Bluetooth headset so I usually get 7% commission on the few camera sales and occasionally 7.5%. These two groups of hubs earn me between $200-$600 a month and traffic continues to grow. Once again, my target is $1,000 per month and I have no reason to think I will not achieve that within the next three months.

I hope that helps any aspiring money-makers out there. You can make money with hubpages, but sometimes you need to think sideways to do so and be pretty focused to make it work. It is a waste of time adding capsules on the off-chance, and this is where most people become disheartened I think. Yes, once in a while some one will buy a skillet from my “how to make hamburgers” hub, but not nearly often enough for me to consider that a success. If you are a regular hubber, I hope this is useful information, but if you are new visitor and would be interested in making money on hubpages, you can sign up here. If you a are also interested in other ways of making money online, I have also written a guide on making money blogging. Combining the two approaches, i.e. hubpages and blogs has worked very well for me.

Now buy a damn skillet.

Making Money Online
Making Money Online

I was told “Submit your hubs to social bookmarking sites to generate huge traffic, “ and I was told this by every would-be internet marketing guru on the ‘net, so I diligently signed up for every social bookmarking site I could find and began submitting my hubs to them. What an incredible waste of time that turned out to be. It turns out that stumbleupon users are not interested in where to find the best foreign exchange broker. They are more interested in pictures of half-naked Indian chicks, but I don’t do hubs full of stolen photos of half-naked Indian chicks, so I was shit out of luck.

I have since found better ways of promoting my work, but it would be a waste of time to go into specifics, because what works for me is unlikely to work for you unless you know the same people I do and write the same stuff as me. Plus the link exchange programs do not work here, and I have a feeling they will be going the way of the dinosaur once google get on top of them. What I will say is – if you can develop a relationship with any high traffic site, do so, and if you can take the time to create funny, useful content – do that also.

LA Times Lies About Electronic Cigarettes

I recently read an electronic cigarette reviews regarding e-cig safety concerning chemicals contained in electronic cigarettes. I was reading an article from the Los Angeles Times "FDA: Electronic cigarettes are a no-no", citing that in countries like Australia, electronic cigarettes have been banned saying that they don't know the heath effects associated with electronic cigarettes.

Of the several manufactures of electronic cigarettes they tested two; Smoking Everywhere and Njoy e-cigs for chemicals and found but 2 toxins not including nicotine contained in e-cigs. Those two chemicals are: diethylene glycol and nitrosamines.

Of those two chemicals, nitrosamine is one of the same carcinogens found in tobacco cigarettes. Had the LA Times been a non-partisan reporter they might have included that nitrosamines is a protein found in beer, fish, red meats and cheese etc.. it is the same carcinogen that has to be ingested to become active. Meaning nitrosamines react to highly acidic conditions like those produced in the stomach before they can cause cancer. The primary cancer caused by nitrosamines is of course colon cancer and the amount of nitrosaminies is regulated by the FDA to decreases a persons chances of getting cancer.

Diethylene glycol is an organic compound found in alcohols and ethers and is not the same chemicals that the LA Times claims is used in anti-freeze. The two are derived fromethylene oxide but serve two different functions. Ethylene glycol is the chemical contained in automobile coolants such as anti-freeze where as Diethylene glycol is a chemicals that attracts water molecules from the environment and converts to carbon dioxide and water.

If that sounds too dangerous to you then you may also want to check out the chemicals contained in decaffeinated coffee. Decaffeinated coffee contains formaldehyde which can also be described as ethylene glycol a substance used in tobacco and decaffeinated coffee. So it stands to show you that the FDA is not so concerned with the two chemicals found in the electronic cigarettes.

True: Electronic cigarettes are not to be promoted as a "quit smoking device", how much sense would that make? The real concern is that the product is being targeted by third party or "non associated" sellers identifying the product as a "quit smoking" device when it is a device the the President of Electronic Cigarettes made perfectly clear that the product demograph is aimed at folks who have been long term smokers to get off tobacco. What's in a tobacco cigarette?

Now, let's take a look at what is in a tobacco cigarette. Yes, you would have come across one very misleading statement made by the LA Times about the use of diethylene glycol which is not the same as the chemicals used in tobacco and decaffeinated coffee which is ethylene glycol.

If you aren't scratching your head as to why the FDA is even involved, only two things stand out. First (as stated in the article from the LA Times) it was suggested that the FDA regulate electronic cigarettes for healthy and safety of the manufacturing plants itself. Just as the department of health and safety will come into your restaurant and make sure the restaurant is clean and safe for it's workers and customers, the same applies here and 2nd of course they want a piece of the pie.

I don't really care if the FDA does regulate the production of electronic cigarettes however my fear, which is my fear for all long term smokers like myself is that they will make you get an Rx for it or increase the cost so much so that most smokers will likely just switch back to tobacco smoke.

The electronic cigarette is a god sent for billions of smokers and non smokers because it is the "safer" alternative to tobacco. The article from the LA Times did make a completely ignorant statement toward smokers and oral fixations which I think was a disgusting and blatantly ***ked up statement,

"Stop-smoking experts say the devices are not useful for ending cigarette addiction because they do nothing to interrupt the hand-to-mouth behavior that is an integral part of the habit."

Had that statement actually come from a "stop smoking" expert the statement never would have been made because oral fixation is a habit that starts in childhood and is compensated through the actions of moving thing to and from your mouth which is why a "real quit smoking excerpt" suggest snaking on carrots, nicotine gum, gum and in this case electronic cigarettes. But since the device is not marketed as a stop smoking device, it makes it a bit of a challenge to keep the product out of government hands. Oh and you can purchase electronic cigarette cartridges without nicotine!

So the world of non-smokers who have something up their butts wants to make a stink about something that they have never had to deal with by making up outlandish statements and slandering smokers everywhere by making us look like we are killers of ourselves and other while continuing to make strides to get them to shut the hell up, then I would think at some point smokers everywhere can also make a case against Non-Smoking Parties intentionally demeaning and belittling smokers for making it look as though smokers intentionally promote cigarettes to children when the parents should just do a better job of letting their own children know the effects of tobacco.

I am fed up with anti-smoking groups giving smokers dirty looks, segregation and just the over all criminal feeling you get from some anit-smoking nazi who gives you the dirty eye for smoking as if you are some lesser human being.

It isn't enough that smokers have peaceful said, "Okay, I see your concern with smoking inside so I will take it outside." We did this, it sucked but we did. Then you tell us that we cannot smoke 20 ft. near a building. So we moved our asses out into the street. Then you tell us that we cannot smoke in any public area even if it is well ventilated and we did that too. Next we cannot smoke at a bus stop. The price of cigarettes gets jacked up, you make the only other proven "quit smoking" device only available through a doctor and in some cases deny smokers jobs.

So shut the hell up if you don't like the idea of electronic cigarettes and get a life! As for smokers out there who are still concerned with the safety of electronic cigarettes containing Diethylene glycol you can try ecighawaii.com Amazon store for electronic cigarettes that do not contain DEG.

How to Be a Success At HubPages in 100 Hubs or Less

Being a joiner has its rewards!
Being a joiner has its rewards!

Almost two years ago I stumbled across HubPages quite by accident. I was searching for some information, and a HubPages article appeared right before my eyes. I was intrigued. Write online and get paid for it while someone else deals with the headaches of web hosting, formatting, indexing and presentation? I’m in!

I was 6 months’ pregnant with my third child, and extremely cranky. HubPages was a great place for me to vent. And fortunately for me, there appear to be a lot of cranky pregnant women out there who responded to my venting, too, because those passionately written articles are some of my most consistently-read hubs. Best earning? No. But best traffic producing articles? Yes. And that’s because they are written from the heart. And I was lucky, because they scored pretty well.

I made no pretense that these hubs were anything but rants, yet they were, and continue to be read on a very regular basis. On HubPages I look like I’ve been pregnant for a very, very long time! The second reason I decided to become an HP member, is that for a few years I had been nursing the dream (sorry for the pun, sometimes I can’t help myself), of helping people in small communities start their own library story time programs. I had often dreamed of doing this when I was a story time presenter in Wickenburg, Arizona, but didn’t have the confidence to start my own blog. Now, after all I have learned on HubPages, I see that I always had the ability, but being a relatively cautious person, it was my experience here on HP that helped me realize I could pursue this dream and succeed. There is no irony in this realization. It has been a path of growth. I’ve grown a lot as a person and a writer through my venture here.

But what does this have to do with you? In this hub, budding internet entrepreneurs who stumble onto HubPages will learn two major things:

Learning #1: HP is a great resource for honing your writing skills. On HP you have everything you need to become a writer and get paid for it. You have the tools, the information, and the support of other writers who want the same things you do. HubPages is a great place to develop your writing skills and to build toward your internet successes. After all the optimization in the world, your content has to be worth reading. I'll focus on how developing a niche can get you there.

Learning #2: Your success isn’t measured in AdSense, Amazon, and eBay revenue alone. I’m not knocking these things. But success is a many-faceted thing, and I feel my experience here has been one of incremental successes. If you press on, even if you’re not quite where you want to be, you will become the success you want to be.

In this Hub, I’ll address these two learnings in a bit more depth, and offer some practical nuggets of advice that I think YOU shouldn‘t have to learn the hard way.

Write What You Know-In Other Words, Find a NICHE

It has been said before, but I will say it again.Write what you know and find a niche or two. Some of the more successful Hubbers write on HubPages from their experiences and passions. Look at these writers and check out how they have developed their niches over time:

  • Wannabwestern (A little shameless self-promotion never hurt anyone!) Writes about books, art, and of course, the American West. I'm just a wannabe, but some people think I'm exotic!
  • Chuck writes about travel and finance; his hubs are polished and urbane. A fellow Arizona writer, he puts an amusing and clever twist on just about everything he writes.
  • Hal Licino writes about his passion for motorcycles and cars. His hubs are detailed and information-packed.
  • Gamergirl writes about online games and other techie topics, with an emphasis on reviews. Her niche is well chosen and popular, and she has something to say about it!
  • Relache is an experienced, artsy Seattle girl who writes tech savvy articles. She is an experienced blog and tech writer to study and learn from.
  • ZSuzsy Bee is an uber homemaker and gardener extaordinaire, she is a polished how-to hubber.
  • Pgrundy A passionate voice for the disgruntled rust belt, and an extraordinarily talented writer whose personal experiences in finance and the paranormal are interesting, topical, and always worth reading.
  • MarisueWrites a former foster mom with a lot of experience and love for parenting, she focuses on writing from the heart on family and parenting issues.
  • In The DogHouse is a sporty family mom who loves to share hubs about topics related to her faith.

All of these hubbers have developed niches here on HP because they are writing what they know, and they are successful because their passionate interest in their topics shows through in what they write. Beyond optimization, these writers share a passion for the truth. Each of these writers have something to offer and that "something" shines in their writing. And they are not alone. There are many many fine writers on HP.

Writers with original topics and in-depth articles get higher scores. But you already know that. That is why it is so important to choose topics that you have a passion for. If you don’t care at all about the topics you choose to write about, those articles are probably going to suffer in quality. There are a few reasons why this is so. First, if you are writing about things you don’t care about, then you probably don’t know that much about them either. Your presentation of the topic will likely be based on internet research, and your article will simply rehash the information that is already out there. So decide what you care about, and write about that! Not because I think you should choose content over revenue, but because I think writing about things you don't really understand causes you to lose credibility with your audience.

When you choose topics that you have a high degree of personal interest and experience in, your your experience shows. It's easier to write and find additional information on your topic, and to write multiple hubs on similar related topics. After all, you're in your home territory, so to speak. You'll bring greater insight to your favorite niche topics and people will come back for more.

I have learned this obvious and easy truth the hard way. I’ve written my share of dull, uninformative, dreary hubs because the topics were poorly chosen. In the hands of other writers they might have been top-notch. But for me, they just weren’t all that great. Fortunately, in this wide wide world of writers, everyone is exotic to someone else, so don't worry that you are too boring to write from your experience. You're fabulous baby, fabulous!

Study the Successes of Other Hubbers

Write 100 hubs, and you will understand the ins and outs of Hubpages. But before you write 100 hubs on your own, study some of the informative how-to articles of those who have gone before. The go-to-guy for learning how to sign up for HP’s affiliate programs is Darkside. His articles served as a primer for me when I was getting started here.

I have learned so much from other Hubbers on HubPages. If you are new to the HP writing platform, spend some time reading the basic how-to-get started articles by various writers. Spend some time every day reading what others have written. Pay particular attention to high-scoring hubs. What kind of title did they choose? Approximately how long was their article? How many links did they use? What was the tone of their article?

Authors on Hubpages publish many many forms of writing online, from fiction, technical how-to articles, to entertaining rants about Hollywood or Bollywood stars. The best way to understand the system is to read what other writers are writing. Read a little bit of everything, and emulate what you like.

After you have written 5 or more articles, start to use the more advanced features of HubPages. Create article groups. Writing more than one article about your chosen topics adds weight to the topic you chose. So come at it from different angles, and write a handful of well-chosen articles about your topic instead of just one. Link your related topics together, and link to them from your facebook, myspace, and twitter accounts. Ask your mom, your sister, and your husband to link in from their accounts too. Spread the word!

Find logical ways to group your body of work, and use one common tag in related hubs to facilitate making rss feeds from your hub groups. I would direct you to InspirePub's article about creating RSS feeds for some exceptional in-depth information about how RSS feeds can improve your readership.

Once you’ve written 5 or so articles, optomize them for keyword searching. SEO articles are a dime a dozen on the internet. Even so, some excellent information has been shared with us by our excellent Hubber friends. And the information on SEO techniques can help improve your writing. There is nothing wrong with trying to bring the readers who need your information to your well-written topics. I wrote several articles that sat almost completely unread because my tags were so poorly matched to my chosen topics.

I had an epiphany when Ryan Hupfer shared information about the Google Adsense Keyword Tool during the 30 Hubs in 30 days challenge. I would have to say my experience with the 30 day challenge was a glorious failure...because I'm on day 32 and still trying to make it to 30 hubs, but I have no regrets. Everything I learned about the Google Adwords Keyword Tool made that experience golden. If you don’t want to do the 30 Hubs Challenge, check out the above link to Ryan's keyword search optimization video on Youtube. This information could double your earnings without writing any new content.

Participate in HubMob. You wont regret it for a moment. I refer you again to Inspirepub's article on RSS feeds to understand intimately why HubMob is a great way to improve traffic to your hubs. HubMob also offers a friendly competitive environment for hubbers to get creative, show their stuff, and step out of their shells. Although I do recommend you develop a niche, participating in HubMob is a fun and interesting way to build your niche, and sometimes to go completely off topic and stretch yourself as a writer in ways you hadn’t before. I wrote an article on Pet Safety in the Desert that started out a bit snarky, but ended up being a useful diversion from my usual topic selection. One of my Hubmob topics was about my husband's hobby: Making Chainmail from Coat Hangers. It made page one on the Google Search Engine. Yayyyy!

I'm surrounded by smart, positive people here on HP!
I'm surrounded by smart, positive people here on HP!

Surround Yourself With Smart, Positive People

I love that most of my fellow writers on HP are smarter and more experienced than me. I started out on HP with a rather large, fully-inflated ego, but over time I have come to realize that I have a lot to learn. And that’s ok. In real life, I often joke with my friends that I love to be surrounded by people who are smarter than I am. On HP, reading successful authors means faster success for you.

Some authors are naturals, but most of us, including me, have to really work at getting a high-quality article written. Everyone likes to be encouraged. I like to read and encourage new writers too. They are some of the most loyal fans and have fresh and interesting experiences to share.

One area where I am admittedly weak is in moderating comments. I love the way Dohn121, a rising star on HubPages, moderates comments. He always has something positive, personable, and encouraging to say. His comments keep people coming back to read more. I am still learning the finer points of this art.

Make Friends Instead of Enemies

Most Hubbers who are writing non-entertainment based articles will probably get the bulk of their readers from internet search traffic. But having a large loyal fan base is a very, very good thing. A fan base offers readership and by leaving comments gives immediate weight to your Hub, and increases your hub score. Sure Search Engine Optimization doesn’t hurt either, but you can’t go wrong with a few good fans. And remember mom’s advice--the only way to have a friend is to be one.

I don’t think making enemies on HubPages is the way to go at all. Sweetie Pie wrote an exceptional hub a while back on the virtues of being nice. I think she is dead on. We need to show professional respect towards the other writers on HP. Many of us, after all, see our hub writing as a business venture. I think it degrades the information we share to get into flame wars with other Hubbers in the comment sections of our revenue-generating articles.

There are some passionate Hubbers out there that I suspect have found a way to monetize snarkiness, but my personal feeling is that personal attacks never produce positive results. And even if they increase comments, the bad feelings they create in the end aren’t worth the short term increase in traffic. Lines are drawn. People take sides. And for every one person that took your side, two people will probably be turned off by the conflict. OK, well enough of that. I’ll step off my soap box now.

Step Out of Your Comfort Zone

Open yourself to new experiences. Become the fan of people from different parts of the globe. Read what they have to say. Don’t limit yourself to becoming the fan of people who are just like you or who are publishing in your topic areas. But don’t limit yourself. By joining other people’s fan clubs who don’t share your content niche, you can learn a lot and access other talented writers who are interested in different things. Become the fan of people who are older than you and younger than you. I have discovered a few fabulously talented writers who I share nothing in common with. I’m glad I’ve met them. They are fascinating people.

Fan the people who write about the same topics as you. You may see them as your competitors, but the internet is an awfully big place. It won‘t hurt you to share your niche area with a few other people. You will be an inspiration to each other, and if you are smart, you can build each other up by sharing and cross-linking your content.

Be a Joiner

Every once in a while participate in a challenge event or a HubMob. Try something different. It might be a rousing success or a big failure. No one will beat you with a stick if you don’t make it on a challenge, or if your kid develops a 107 degree temperature and you can’t finish. I’m really happy I explored some different content areas through HubMob. I have been surprised by a few of my off-niche hubs that have been relatively successful. Seems like I was able to tap into some areas that other people could relate to more than library story time. Sorry to you librarians. I think you‘re special…we just need more of you to increase my ad revenue. Now that I know, I can develop those new areas over time into some new niches.

And if you haven't already, join Twitter, Myspace, Facebook, or some other social networking sites where you can promote your activities here. It really does make a difference.

Be Patient and Keep Writing

There are some exceptionally successful people on HP, but some of them have been at it for two or three years or more. You will have to keep at it for a while if you are like me. Be encouraged by your successes, but don’t become despondent if you don’t hit the first page of Google overnight or even the first page of the HubPages profile section. Keep at it and develop your niche, provide useful information, and have fun. Your success will grow with each hub you write.

Worst paid targeted traffic

Paid targeted traffic, $20 for ‘2000′ unique targeted traffic straight forward to your site. What the hell?! Yeah guys, thats exactly what i thought too when I heard such offers in webmaster forums. We spend hundreds and thousands on advertising to drive traffic, and look, we can get it for $20 umh…smells fishy to me, what about you pal? Was curious pal, was really curious…and I gave it a try pal, i had to give it a try, could not resist to see how fishy this is.

There are two options they can sell targeted traffic to people, 1. to spends loads and loads of time and money in hunting domains with strong backlinks and pageranking and then redirect them to the one that purchases some of the traffic these domains have or 2. you just get that what i call ‘ghost traffic’, in simple words bots.

Hunting domains that are going to expire just for redirecting to your own site needs a lot of time and effort, this is the tough side of the domainers market and if you don’t know what you are doing you will be just wasting time and money. I know what i am speaking, because i used to buy expired domains to drive traffic to my sites, you need to update at least weekly your domain list and redirect them to your site, because that traffic starts to slowly vanish as the time passes. Think about, how much time, money and dedication is required to offer this type of traffic as service, to one, two, three, ten, one hounder customers? How many domain names should be back-ordered daily (yes pal, you need to backorder this type of domains, i told you earlier this is the tough side of the domainers market, they are all doing the same exact thing you are, and wins who is faster and has a better equipment, with equipment i mean domainers equipment. Domainers backorder their domain of interest from two or even three backorder services provider.).

I contacted one of these ‘companies’ (i don’t want to publish their name but feel free to contact me if you want to know the name) and asked some pre-sales questions. The answers did not convince me, my thoughts regard to this service remained the same if not became even strong, fishy! Purchased the cheapest pack, 2500 uniques within one month for $19.95. The account got activated after 24 hours and username and password was given to me for my control panel to check my campaign. In this panel, i was able to see the number of redirected users and the IP’s of those redirected users to my site. The first time when i logged in this panel i saw 49 unique visitors already redirected to my site, ehmm. The days would pass, the hits on AWstats would appear, but i still did not saw a single visitor to convert in client, or at least a pre-sales e-mail to be sent from those visitors. I gave it some more time, and started to monitor this in different ways. After couple days, i notice the Alexa ranking increase and i started to think that my services suck big time if this is a genuine targeted traffic.

I have a live chat window on my website which became a powerful tracking feature for me on this case. The main use of this Web based live chat software is to make easier to clients to reach the support department or the sales department. This web based live chat has a great feature that gives good informations about the visitors that are on my web site, results such as, referrer site (from where did this visitor found about my site), how long a visitor is on my site, a history of all the pages the visitor has been surfing while has been on my site and also it shows if this is the first time this visitor (IP address) is visiting my website or he is a returning visitor. I was tracking and monitoring the traffic for which i paid for a week or so. I was on live web chat personally for hours and hours, all the visitors that i could find online surfing on my website were visitors coming from those sites where i had paid advertisement campaigns running. Neither one single visitor was referred from the IP/site that i was told the visitors would be redirected from.

Suspecting every day more on this targeted traffic service i had purchased, started a deeper investigation, i took the whole list of the IP’s that were given to me from the control panel and checked them one by one if those IP’s match with the IP’s that have visited my site since the day i purchased for this service. The results were incredible, from 200 and so IP addresses only 1 IP did match, fishy fishy.

I have converted better visitors from the expired domain names i personally tracked and registered instead of the visitors that were redirected from this purchased service.

This has been my WORST investment (even tho i was curious to test this service) that I have ever made. This kind of traffic (if is genuine) could be nice for a site that offers free stuff, free services, but speaking of my own experience for websites that sell products or offer paid services this traffic is impossible (at least was for me) to convert.

If anyone has experience with kind of traffic, i would be glad to hear your positive or negative testimonial for the purchase of this kind of targeted traffic. StumbleUpon
